Healthcare works best when you put patients at its heart, and it's no different for healthcare communications. We are continually told how good storytelling, particularly with patients at its core, can inspire, engage and provoke action.

But building narratives around patients is not easy. For many, patient-centric communications focuses on speaking to and sharing people’s stories, but this can be done with relatively little understanding or empathy of the challenges patients face on a daily basis. It isn’t enough. It’s time to become much more patient obsessed – how many of you really know what it’s like to live with a chronic condition?

In this briefing, Mark Doyle, the creator of A Life in a Day – a programme of immersive experiences that place you into a patient’s shoes – discusses why being ‘patient obsessed’ is a must for the entire pharma and healthcare industries. He will talk about the power of putting patients at the heart of healthcare-related communications, the importance of empathy in generating meaningful and lasting patient-centric engagement and why the way forward is to ditch the term ‘patient centricity’ for something that provokes real action.

A Life in a Day uses theatre techniques – and live actors – for its visceral, immersive experiences that are developed hand-in-hand with patients and healthcare professionals. They are delivered via your smartphone and designed to be completed during a typical working day to reflect the reality of living with a chronic health condition. The choices people make during the day-long simulation determines what happens next, just as in real life.
