Outline

There is a strong association between good health literacy and improved patient outcomes and if the HCP-patient partnership is the cornerstone of future disease-management decision-making, health literacy is a critical success factor. However, the COVID 19 pandemic has highlighted a significant imbalance in levels of health literacy across different cultural, socioeconomic and age populations. In the era of increasing complexity in medical interventions and personalised medicine, this could be a significant problem for public health bodies. As healthcare communicators, we have a role to play in supporting both HCPs and the pharma industry in addressing this imbalance.

Health literacy is not about dumbing down the science, but about connecting with audiences in a meaningful way such that they gain understandable and accurate information and can be informed partners. It’s not only about comprehension – audiences should be empowered to ‘act’. And HCPs likely need as much support and training in communicating effectively, as audiences need in interpretation.

In this webinar we’ll be bringing a panel of experts together to set out and discuss the multi-faceted challenge that is getting Health Literacy approaches right.  After all, what is the point of spending hundreds of thousands on a campaign that the intended audience can’t relate to and perceive as irrelevant to their circumstances? They’ll simply disengage.

Our panel will include contributors representing HCPs, academia, pharma, public health and the media. Laura Foster, the BBC’s Health, Science and Environment Correspondent will moderate a discussion which focuses on how health literacy principles can be appropriately applied, considering illustrative case studies from different sectors.
