CPD Course: Understanding how clinical trial data informs and shapes healthcare communications

General information

W. Edwards Deming once said, "Without data, you're just another person with an opinion".

As healthcare communicators we operate within an evidence-based environment where data plays a central role. A good understanding of data, how it is collected and how best to use it can equip us to succeed, regardless of whether we are managing projects or producing content. This series of educational workshops explores the various aspects of data communications; from what constitutes good quality evidence, to why we need it and how to communicate it meaningfully.

In the first module we begin with published clinical trial data, and how effectively communicating these data serves as a cornerstone for advancing knowledge and influencing treatment strategies.

The overall aim of the session is to help attendees to translate and communicate clinical data through coherent narratives that can meaningfully convey the significance and implications of clinical research to a range of different audiences.

Dates:

Tuesday 18th June (virtual) - 9:30am - 1:00pm UK time

Content:

To gain the maximum benefit from this workshop delegates will undertake 2 hours guided pre-work followed by a 3 hour workshop. (5 hours CPD time in total).

Who should attend:

This is an introductory course for junior team members starting out in the field of healthcare communications or mid-level account or creative professionals interested in gaining a better understanding of how scientific data is communicated.

Delegates can attend this virtual workshop in June or attend the in-person workshop in London in August.

Presenters:

Ruth Slater – Ruth has been focussed on how evidence is used to shape healthcare and improve people’s lives for over 25 years. As a communications coach and trainer Ruth has helped many different teams and individuals to share their science and data more effectively and with meaning. She has worked with academic research scientists, NHS data groups, patient advocacy organisations and clinical, market access and medical affairs teams from across the pharmaceutical industry. She is a firm believer that the data never speaks for itself, and that good communication should be considered a pivotal step when ensuring that advances in research and medicine achieve their full potential.

Emma Gorton – Emma has spent her career working with companies to find stories and narratives in their data and bringing these to life in ways that resonate with the people that need to hear them. Emma believes that good communications in healthcare has the potential to improve the overall health of the population. By making science and data accessible and understandable individuals can take better ownership of their own health, doctors can make the right decisions for their patients and policymakers can enact change that improves outcomes.

Future workshops:

Our future modules in this workshop series will examine the way in which evidence and data are now communicated in the modern world, including the growing trend of revealing the latest data by press release, before peer-review and publication, and the evolving role of social media. Our third more advanced module, planned for 2025, will support medical writers and other communicators who have a key role in interpreting, presenting and publishing new research and data.

Learning objectives

This workshop will:

  • Equip attendees with the skills to confidently unpick the key aspects of a published clinical study and evaluate the quality of the evidence from a variety of perspectives.
  • Share the methodologies involved in the collection and publication of clinical data and demystify statistical terms such as parametric t-tests, confidence intervals, hazard ratios, and sensitivity analyses.
  • Consider the evidential needs of different audiences, from patients and clinicians to regulatory authorities and financial decision makers, which can make an important difference when it comes to communicating data effectively.
