The Science of Inspiration

Key Speaker: Professor Costas I. Karageorghis (Brunel University London)

Panel Member: Clare Preskett (Head of Team Development and Performance at GCI Health)

Panel Member: Robb Buchan (Associate Project Director at Lumanity)

Moderator: Mike Dixon - HCA CEO

It has long been said that a team is greater than the sum of its individual parts. But how can we increase the ‘stickiness’ or cohesion among team members so that the potential of the team is fully realised? Moreover, how do we do this while also satisfying the psychological needs of individual members within the team? After all, each team is characterised by individuals with a range of personalities, backgrounds and motivations.

In this presentation, you will enhance (a) your understanding of the nature of cohesion – including its task-related and social dimensions, (b) the psychological needs common to every member of the workforce and (c) what we can do as individuals to build cohesion while ensuring that our psychological needs are fully met. The presentation will be peppered with practical examples and exercises that you can try individually or within your work units.

The session will open with some warm-up exercises and an explanation of the key concepts. You will learn about the dynamics that pervade all groups (e.g. role acceptance), group phenomena (e.g. social loafing) and the potentially adverse influences of groups (e.g. through the formation of cliques). In the main part of the session, you will gain understanding of how theory and scientific findings can inform practice. Unlike many other sessions of this nature, the emphasis will be at the individual level, rather than the department or corporate level.

Examples will be taken from a range of contexts to inform practice with an emphasis on the presenter’s background in elite sport. Participants will be encouraged to adapt the examples to a healthcare context so that the principles that are expounded can be applied accordingly. You will learn how to nurture your social intelligence, improve lines of communication, enhance the sense of esprit de corps in your work unit and draw manifold benefits from the diversity within your team.

The session will empower you to reframe how you function in the workplace, interact with close colleagues and channel your emotional energy.
